An open letter to new homeschooling parents.
(This was an earlier post on my old blog. But I thought it was fitting now, while so many parents are planning the next school year.)
Dear New Homeschooling Parent,
Has anyone told you today that you are doing great? That you are amazing? Well, I’m here to tell you that you are.
Since the middle of the Covid Pandemic, I have had several friends begin their homeschool journey. Most of these began because their children were home from public or private schools, and they decided to continue. As a veteran homeschooling mom, I cannot imagine how difficult that must have been. When planning each school year, I had time to research and plan my curriculum and lessons. I cannot fathom my child being in school one day and having the new responsibility of educating them the following day. I think I would still be hiding under the covers.
New Homeschool Parent think you are courageous.
Sadly, I have heard some veteran homeschooling moms remark that these new moms “are not the same as us because they didn’t choose to homeschool; they had to do it.” What? Seriously? Hearing this was more than frustrating.
Trust me; there is no “us.” There is no secret club, no handshake, no test you must pass, and no hazing ritual you must endure. You are Mom or Dad, and you have a child, and you’re in.
So, I am here to say….” Welcome to the club; we are happy to have you!”
New parent, please do not let anyone suggest you are “not the same” as those that have homeschooled a bit longer. Trust me, their journey has had its ups, downs, and detours, and your journey will be the same.
You are doing fantastic. If you are teaching classes in-person or online, have someone else teaching your child, or if you are part of a co-or or not, you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Whatever curriculum you are using, you are doing enough. If you begin school at 7 am, or Noon, you are doing great.
Now, this is not to say that your homeschool experience may not need some tweaking here and there; we all adjust and make changes. Personally we’ve gone through four, count them FOUR Math curriculums over the years. But, New Homeschool Mom or Dad – you are unique and wonderful, and you’ve got this!
PS – But hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we did have a secret handshake??? You know, one of those slappy, finger-snapping, dance-y ones. I’ll let you know when I come up with something.
